SANE

"Working to improve the quality of life for anyone affected by mental illness."

Who We Help, Why We Help & the Difference It Makes

Mental illness is complex and can be enduring.

"It's like living in a house of paper. Too much is seen, too much is heard. Too many shadows and too many voices."

It can also have an impact on carers, family and friends; SANE works to make sure their needs are not forgotten either.

SANE is a UK-wide charity working to improve quality of life for people affected by mental illness.

We have three main objectives:

  1. To raise awareness and combat stigma about mental illness, educating and campaigning to improve mental health services.
  2. To provide care and emotional support for people with mental health problems, their families and carers as well as information for other organisations and the public.
  3. To initiate research into the causes and treatments of serious mental illness such as schizophrenia and depression and the psychological and social impact of mental illness.

What Would You Like Now?

Choose one of the options below.

SANE provides emotional support, guidance and information to anyone affected by mental illness, including families, friends and carers.

Our mental health support services are confidential. We offer non-judgemental and compassionate emotional support. Our team of mental health professionals and trained volunteers create a space where you feel safe to talk about things that are most affecting you. We also make time so we can think together about the options available to you.

Call SANEline

SANEline is a national out-of-hours mental health helpline offering specialist emotional support, guidance and information to anyone affected by mental illness, including family, friends and carers. We are open every day of the year from 4.30pm to 10.30pm on 0300 304 7000.

Our helpline is here to support you when you feel you have reached a moment of crisis. We know that moment of crisis is different for everybody – some people can reach that point daily, and for some people it is a rare occurrence.  The helpline is a confidential service for those aged 16 or over.

Sign-up to Textcare

Textcare is designed to provide emotional support and connection at the times you need it most. We provide bespoke one-way messages directly to your mobile phone.

This is a confidential service for those aged 16 and over, and each message sent will be individually written for you based on the information you give us in an online form. You can sign-up for Textcare here.

Join the SANE Community

We want you to feel part of a community as we work together to address the complexities of mental ill-health, including stigma, exclusion and isolation, as well as the daily challenges of living with mental illness.

We provide platforms for peer-to-peer support, for the exchange of ideas and guidance.  We encourage new members to join our online Support Forum; share blogs on your experiences, thoughts and opinions; offer space for the sharing of artmusic and videos; and spark conversations on our social media channels such as Facebook and Twitter.

Head Start

Head Start is a practical, educational and motivational support programme for people with schizophrenia. To be completed with healthcare professionals in scheduled appointments, the programme is designed to provide information, develop skills to help individuals better manage their condition, and achieve personal goals. For more information please click here

SANE on Suicide

SANE on Suicide presents the findings from our suicide prevention research. We talked to people who had attempted suicide, their close family and friends, and people bereaved by suicide. It's for anyone affected by suicide or who'd like to know more about it - people who are or have been suicidal, family members and friends, professionals working with those who are or may be suicidal.

Additional Information

SANE does not charge for its services but your phone provider may charge you. Our helpline uses an 0300 number and this means helpline calls cost no more than calls to geographic (01 and 02) numbers from a landline, and they are included in inclusive and free minutes on mobiles.

Crisis

If you feel you are in crisis, you might like to know about some options for help and support in addition to the free help available from SANE.

Black Dog Campaign

The Black Dog Campaign aims to reduce the stigma surrounding mental illness and encourages people to seek help early, rather than suffering in silence.
