Who We Help, Why We Help & the Difference It Makes

Since its inception in 1927 Deaf Direct (previously known as Worcestershire and Herefordshire Association for Deaf people (WHAD) has worked within the Midlands region to create a society in which deaf and hard of hearing people enjoy equal participation and access without barriers or prejudice. With our specialist team of 30 staff we have become recognised as a trusted name providing high quality bespoke services to deaf and hard of hearing people, their family members and carers, as well as professionals and other organisations.

Information & Guidance

Anyone can contact us with any queries about deafness or hearing loss so please get in touch with Information Services.

Communication Services

Book sign language interpreters, lipspeakers, notetakers and other communication professionals to ensure effective communication at any appointments, meetings, events or training. Contact us to discuss your communication needs. 

Outreach Services 

Support for deaf and hard of hearing clients and their families to maintain independent living, such as help to get out and about, support with money management and housing issues, access to equipment, learning new skills and how to access other support services. We can meet with you to discuss your needs. 

Training Courses 

Nationally accredited British Sign Language, Deaf Awareness and Communication Tactics courses. Bespoke training in the workplace to improve communication and accessibility. We can help you identify training needs. 

Youth and Family Services 

Social activities and support for deaf and hard of hearing young people and their families. This can include individual or group activities. 

Hard of Hearing Support 

Information and advice about hearing aids, assistive equipment, strategies for communication, lipreading courses, and social and support groups. We can help you identify the support you need and what is available.

Translation Services

We are able to provide a telephone and translation service, working with clients to translate letters, emails, text messages or any other written material in to British Sign Language. We can then translate a phone conversation for you to the sender of the written material or assist in writing back to them.

Deaf Centres

Local centres that provide a base for our services and for user groups to meet. A selection of meeting and training rooms are also available to hire

Our Staff and Volunteers come from the deaf community and use BSL, others are hearing people who use BSL and lip reading.

Good Vibrations

Are you interested in joining a unique choir? Good Vibrations is accessible to deaf, hard of hearing and hearing people with an interest in music. Our choir holds rehearsals on Tuesday evenings and is a bilingual choir with performances of both singing and sign language. We perform a variety of songs and the aim of the choir is to break down barriers between deaf and hearing people to make friends, make music and have fun! If you are interested in joining the choir as a singer, signer or accompanist, please email info@deafdirect.org.uk for more information 


Deaf Coffee Mornings

Deaf Direct offers hard of hearing social groups enabling hard of hearing people, and those with tinnitus, to engage in accessible social activities together. Any hard of hearing people or those with tinnitus can participate in the groups and the activities – supportive friends and family are also welcome to attend.

They are an opportunity to meet socially with others who have similar hearing problems in a friendly atmosphere, to enjoy a social coffee morning and reduce the isolation so often felt by those with a hearing loss. Our monthly programme is varied, we have visiting speakers covering a range of topics, not just those linked to deafness, or sometimes just a social session where you can chat. During the summer we have outings and at Christmas a party or theatre trip. Each month we try to have a short exercise of lipreading, a skill which is invaluable to the hard of hearing.

Every two weeks on Wednesdays between 10 a.m. and 12.30 pm.
